Building the Elite
Book Design, Photo Selection, Typesetting, Production Design
Objective: Fulfill the intent of this book’s title by building an elite reference manual that is both practical and beautiful.
CLIENTS: Jonathan Pope and Craig Weller, authors
ROLE: Book Designer
WITH: Charles Carpenter
Jonathan and Craig knew their manuscript was truly like no other reference available for those seeking to become special operators. It combined systems theory, psychology, and methods for practical application with personal stories from the authors and others. They wanted folks to take this book with them both to the gym and the coffee shop, with the ability to jump from section to section easily. There is a ton of written content that needed to feel approachable and inviting.
I created clearly defined styles for the different types of content, with chapters indicated with tabs so that readers could easily jump to different parts of the book. Beautiful typography, subtle design elements, and ample use of white space elevated the material, along with photos from the field and original illustrations and cover design created by Charles Carpenter. I’m really proud of this book, it challenged me in all the right ways.
