Objective: Design a visual system based on a “how to” theme that fits into the author’s existing body of work
The look & feel of this book needed to pair with books Michael McDowell had published with other entities as well as workbooks he had published with Mimi & Todd Press. The underlying concept of “making Rigorous PBL doable” by breaking it into smaller parts immediately brought how-to manuals to mind. I embraced the imagery of retro how-to manuals for the cover art and interior illustrations. I handed off the page layout to a trusted partner, providing her with style ideas but relying on her expertise to determine what would work for both print and ebook without breaking the bank.
